The Learning Event:

The world of workplace learning is changing fast. How well are you equipped to not just cope with the change, but pre-empt it and possibly lead it?

Many workplace learning professionals can name the significant trends discussed around the water cooler such as the demand for shorter classes, more online content - especially on tablets and mobile devices - and the demand for more accountability.

However, to meaningfully navigate these future shifts we need to understand what is driving those trends and build our strength in those areas so we can anticipate future trends and influence the future of training.

In this session, Jonathan Halls will look at the top 12 critical survival skills for workplace learners, and discuss key steps we can take to prepare for the future to ensure our career constructively contributes to the future.

Presentation in Brief

·  Identify what’s changing and how it’s affecting both your workplace and your career as a learning professional.

·  Identify the 12 key competencies that workplace learning professionals need to survive in the future.

·  Identify the skills you need to work on to maintain your competitiveness.

Jonathan discussed this topic at an evening presentation for our chapter in October 2011 and received rave reviews. Here’s a sample of the feedback received:

* Jonathan was excellent! Engaging speaker with many relevant real-world examples to support key learning objective points.

* He is fabulous!  I'd gladly have him present at every meeting if he'd do it! This was the best content of any ASTD event I've attended. Even better than Afterburners!

We received requests to have Jonathan return to present this topic from many members who were not able to attend in 2011. We are delighted to have this exceptional facilitator return to ASTD-Lincoln. Those who attended his presentation in 2011 will hear some new stories in this learning event. Everyone who attends the workshop will have the opportunity to focus on two hot topics for the future that draw from Jonathan’s upcoming book.

The Workshop

After the learning event, Jonathan will run a 2-hour workshop focusing on two hot topics of the future: building workplace innovation and five principles of successful communication.

PART ONE: Innovation Revolution

Creativity is one of the top 12 skills that workplace professionals need to create success in the 21st century. And workplace innovation is one of the critical capabilities that successful organizations must have embedded into their culture to perform. Both are linked, but require different approaches. In this direct and practical workshop, Jonathan will share the 3-step creativity model he developed to help people find their true creativity and discuss how creativity can be planned into your life. He developed the model while teaching creativity at the BBC because he felt other approaches and models were unnecessarily complicated. He will also discuss how to use the principles of the model to make creativity a permanent habit in your workplace. This workshop draws from his upcoming book, Creativity in 3 Steps - A Practical Guide to Workplace Innovation and Personal Creativity.

PART TWO:  Five Communication Principles for the New Era

Communication is like bad traffic. Everyone complains about it but no one seems to fix it. In Part Two of this workshop, focused on another key survival skill, Jonathan takes a fresh look at a tired old subject. A subject that’s been the focus of bad climate surveys, boring workshops, and countless self-help books which have tended to say the same old thing.

Jonathan argues that the models we followed in the '90s - and that are still the basis of many communication courses - are woefully out of date. Successful communication in the 21st century needs to be understood in terms of the post-industrial workplace. Don’t worry - he doesn’t plan an academic presentation about post-industrialization, although his comments will be grounded in this thinking. Instead he’ll share five principles of successful communication that can be applied to any communication situation to ensure successful communication. Participants will get to see, try, and discuss these principles so they can apply them to their own workplace
