The Learning Event:

Leadership development was identified as a top priority in Pricewaterhouse Coopers' International 15th Annual Global CEO Survey 2012. While many organizations are paying attention to this priority as part of their talent management strategy, high performance organizations are especially interested in and understand the strengths of transformational leadership.

When transformational leaders hit their stride, afascinating scaffolding process occurs-leaders and followers "raise one another to higher levels of morality and motivation." Transformational leaders raise the bar by appealing to their followers' values and motivations. Leadership is proactive, expectations are high, the entire staff is engaged, and true collaboration is possible. The results of this scaffolding effect translate into higher performing organizations.

Sue Schlichtemeier-Nutzman, Ph.D., and Sally Bisson-Best, J.D., will provide an overview of the differences between transformational and transactional (traditional) leadership based on current research and best practices. Because only a small fraction of business leaders currently reflect a transformational style, the focus of this learning event will be on how truly transformational leaders can positively impact organizational culture by creating learning opportunities for their followers, thus stimulating them to solve problems and frame new possibilities.

Recent research demonstrates that transformational leadership can markedly increase customer and employee satisfaction and quality of work, while reducing absenteeism, staff turnover, and error rates.

Workshop Description

Strengths of Transformational Leadership: Training Components You Can Use

Workplace learning professionals are often in the optimal position to model and develop a culture of transformational leadership. The afternoon workshop will provide specific tools that can be used in your training sessions. In addition, you will receive permission to use the PowerPoint slides in your own training sessions.

Components include:

 1) Assessing your own leadership style

 2) Appealing to followers' higher order values

 3) Ways to champion the development of followers

(or trainees) by providing individualized                          consideration and intellectual stimulation

 4) Practicing the Deming cycle for facilitating organizational change. (Deming is the management expert who launched

continuous improvement. His model provides a clear way

for leaders and managers to champion change.)

 5) Acknowledging and addressing potential challenges to transformational leaders

 6) Supporting problem solving that exceeds self-interest through transformational leadership
