EMPLOYEE LEARNING WEEK

Aesthetic Education: Fostering Eco-consciousness in Adult Learners

Facilitator: Cynthia Way

This workshop will explore the use of aesthetic education and pedagogy to help adult learners develop an eco-consciousness required in a sustainable world. Dewey (1934) said aesthetic education is an open ended process through which intentional efforts are made to create imagination, broaden perspectives, and help learners realize their potential. Bateson (1979) thought that actively appreciating art while engaging in learning is key to understanding the patterns and connections between nature and the mind. Because aesthetic experience precipitates a connection with both nature and community (McMahon, 2011), it can result in a deeper understanding of humanity (Smith, 1996), a broader and more open perspective (Ciantis, 1996), and change attitudes that foster new environmentally and socially responsible behaviors (Pless, Maak, & Stahl, 2011). For these reasons, this workshop will explore both the nature of the aesthetic experience and how adult educators can use aesthetic experiences to help adult develop new attitudes and adopt new behaviors that value and attend to their relationships with others and with nature.

Who should attend:
Adult educators interested in helping adults develop an eco-consciousness required for a more sustainable lifestyle. They will explore the concepts of eco-consciousness and its implication for education for sustainability.

Adult educators interested in learning about the educative potential of aesthetic experiences. They will explore John Dewey's theory of aesthetic education and his claims that it can result in significant learning.

HRD professionals interested learning how to support leaders create more sustainable, green organizations. They will explore how aesthetic education experiences can be used to help leaders and develop eco-consciousness and sustainable practices

This workshop is open to the Public with free registration for everyone. Please register to help us plan for the event.
