Leadership Through Gamification: Helping Learning Feel Like Play

Presenter: Michael Fryda
 ________________________________________________________________________

People can often struggle to imagine realistic variables out of fear of making mistakes. Games can help people shed their fear. As people become less stressed and more open-minded, they are more likely to challenge inborn misconceptions. That’s exactly what Michael Fryda, 2010 Nebraska Teacher of the Year, is doing in his classroom. He uses the power of gamification to help students engage in critical and lateral thinking. Michael places students in charge of simulated real-world decisions as practice for future choices.

During this session for ATD Nebraska, Michael will highlight how gamification can provide a safe environment that opens up willingness to confront difficult decisions. He will also address common barriers that stall leaders in developing gamification as part of their leadership toolkit.

The question is, “How might gamification add to your skills in developing talent at your organization?”

How could games unlock strategic thinking and challenge how a leader engages?

By the end of the program, participants will be able to:

  • Consider examples of how gamification can bring an authentic, real-world learning experience to students about complex topics
  • Identify common barriers that can be overcome to pursue gamification as a leadership strategy
  • Challenge themselves to consider how gamification might help them to develop and support talent in their organization
